Altitude, hail and mountain grades

Colorado Springs sits above 6,000 feet, where thin air exposes weak ignition parts and grades up Ute Pass work brakes and cooling systems. Hail season is a fact of life, winter snow and salt wear brakes and batteries, and military families move often. On-site battery, brake and pre-trip checks keep Springs drivers ready.

Getting around Colorado Springs

I-25US 24Powers BoulevardAcademy BoulevardWoodmen RoadSR 115Nevada Avenue

Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak and spreads east across rolling plains, covering more ground than any other city in the state. I-25 runs north-south through the city toward Denver and Pueblo, passing the Air Force Academy on the north end. US 24 climbs west through Manitou Springs and up Ute Pass toward Woodland Park, and runs east along Platte Avenue toward the plains. SR 115 heads south past Fort Carson toward Cañon City.

On the east side, Powers Boulevard and Academy Boulevard are the main north-south routes, carrying heavy traffic between neighborhoods, shopping and the military installations. Woodmen Road crosses the north side, Nevada Avenue runs through downtown, and Garden of the Gods Road links the west side to I-25. The I-25 corridor through the middle of the city and the big Powers and Academy intersections back up at rush hour, and gate times at Fort Carson, Peterson and Schriever add waves of commuter traffic.

Colorado Springs Airport sits on the east side beside Peterson Space Force Base, and its parking lots are a short trip from most of the city. Mountain Metropolitan Transit runs bus routes, but nearly everyone drives. The Pikes Peak Highway climbs to the summit, and drivers who make the trip face a long, steep descent. Because military families transfer in from every part of the country, many cars here arrive tuned for sea level and humid weather and have to adjust to altitude, hail and dry cold.

Where we come to you

Around Colorado Springs, where the car sits

Stop 01

Downtown

Offices, restaurants, Colorado College and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum on the southwest edge of downtown. Garages and metered streets dominate; give the garage, level and space, and aim for a weekday morning.

Stop 02

Old Colorado City

A historic district of shops and older homes along Colorado Avenue on the west side. Driveways are narrow and street parking is the norm, and the side streets give a mechanic room to work at the curb.

Stop 03

Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain

Large homes and winding streets in the southwest foothills near Cheyenne Cañon. Some driveways are steep and icy in winter, so a level apron near the garage is the safest place for a jack.

Stop 04

Briargate and the north side

Suburban neighborhoods, office parks and schools near Woodmen Road and I-25. Attached garages make home repairs comfortable, and office lots off Research Parkway work well during the day.

Stop 05

The Powers corridor

Newer subdivisions, apartments and shopping centers strung along Powers Boulevard on the east side. Retail parking fields are a practical place to meet a car that died mid-errand, and HOA rules may apply at home.

Stop 06

Rockrimmon

Hillside neighborhoods west of I-25 on the north side, with curving streets and sloped driveways. Snow lingers on the shaded slopes, so mention whether the street has been plowed.

Stop 07

Fort Carson and the south side

Neighborhoods near the Army post along SR 115 and South Academy. Soldiers and their families often have repairs done at off-post homes before or after duty, since getting a mechanic through the gate is difficult.

Stop 08

Peterson and the east side

Neighborhoods and business parks around the airport and Peterson Space Force Base. Off-base rentals and apartment complexes are common work sites, and the open terrain catches a lot of wind.

Road conditions

What Colorado Springs does to a car

The city sits even higher than Denver, and the thin air shows up in how cars run.

Engines make less power, and weak ignition parts, dirty injectors and tired oxygen sensors cause misfires and rough idling sooner than they would at lower elevations. Coolant boils at a lower temperature, so a cracked overflow tank or tired radiator cap can push a car into overheating on a summer climb. The high-altitude sun cracks dashboards, fades paint and dries out door seals and wiper blades.

Hail is part of life along this stretch of the Front Range, and summer storms can crack windshields, break lights and flatten radiator and A/C condenser fins in minutes.

Winter brings snow and ice, usually followed by sunny days that melt it, and the freeze-thaw cycle opens potholes across the east side. The de-icers used on city roads and highways corrode brake lines and caliper hardware, and strong winds push snow and grit across Powers Boulevard and the open plains.

Mountain driving tests every system.

Climbing Ute Pass and the Pikes Peak Highway works the cooling system hard, and the descent from the summit is long enough that a brake check station stops drivers on the way down. Summer wildfire smoke clogs engine and cabin filters. A battery and brake inspection in the fall prepares a car for winter, and in spring a good underbody wash and a look at the suspension after pothole season round out the year.

Questions

Colorado Springs FAQ

Do you serve Fountain, Monument and the base areas?

Most Colorado Springs mobile mechanics cover El Paso County, including Fountain, Monument, Security-Widefield and base housing neighborhoods.

Can a mobile mechanic work in the snow?

Yes, within reason. A garage or covered spot helps.

Do you do pre-purchase inspections?

Many Colorado Springs mobile mechanics offer inspections at the seller's location.

Can a mobile mechanic work on my car at Fort Carson, Peterson or the Academy?

Installation access is controlled, and a civilian mechanic usually needs a sponsor and an approved pass to get through the gate. Most military families have the work done at an off-post home or meet the mechanic outside the gate. If your car died on post, check with the visitor center about access or getting the car moved, then share where it will be.

Should I have my brakes checked before driving the Pikes Peak Highway?

It's a smart move. The descent from the summit is long and steep, and brakes overheat quickly if the pads are worn or the fluid is old. A mechanic can inspect pads, rotors and fluid in your driveway before the trip. On the way down, use a lower gear so the engine helps slow the car, and stop at the brake check station when directed.

We're moving on military orders. Can you check the car before the trip?

Yes. A pre-trip inspection before a long move can cover brakes, battery, tires, belts, hoses, fluids and lights, so problems turn up before you're on the interstate. Schedule it a week or two ahead of departure to leave time for parts and repairs. Share the vehicle details and your move date, and you'll get a quote up front.
