Columbus sits on the Chattahoochee River across from Phenix City, Alabama, at the fall line where the river drops through rapids that now host an urban whitewater course. I-185 runs north from the city toward LaGrange and I-85, and the J.R. Allen Parkway, carrying US 80, crosses the north side east-west. Victory Drive runs along the south side toward the Army post, Manchester Expressway crosses North Columbus, Veterans Parkway runs north-south through the heart of the city, and Macon Road heads east toward Midland.
Manchester Expressway and Veterans Parkway are lined with shopping centers and restaurants and back up at rush hour, especially near the I-185 interchanges. Victory Drive and the roads leading to the post's gates carry heavy traffic at shift times, and the bridges into Phenix City fill with commuters crossing the state line. Uptown's streets are calmer, centered on Broadway and the RiverWalk. A breakdown on I-185 or Victory Drive is best handled by getting to a lot or side street first.
Columbus Airport sits on the north side, with parking lots a short trip from most neighborhoods. The Army post south of the city is the area's largest employer, so deployments, training cycles and military moves shape daily life and traffic. METRA buses serve the city, but most people drive, and many families split their time between Georgia and Alabama addresses. Because so many households arrive on military orders from other parts of the country, plenty of cars here are new to Georgia's heat and humidity, and the first summer is often when a tired battery or a marginal cooling system finally gives up.
