Erie sits on the south shore of Lake Erie, sheltered by the curving peninsula of Presque Isle, and its highways connect it with Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. I-90 runs east to west south of the city, I-79 runs north from Pittsburgh into the city and ends near the bayfront, and I-86 heads east from I-90 toward Jamestown and the Southern Tier of New York. US 20 crosses the city as Buffalo Road and West 26th Street, and PA 5 follows 12th Street and the lakeshore.
Peach Street, which carries US 19, is the main north-south commercial strip, running from downtown south past the big shopping district near I-90. The Bayfront Parkway follows the waterfront, the Bayfront Connector links I-90 on the east side with the bayfront, and State Street runs through the heart of downtown. Traffic is light by big-city standards, but lake-effect snow squalls can turn I-90 and I-79 into whiteouts in minutes, and a breakdown in a squall is dangerous.
Erie International Airport sits on the west side in Millcreek, and EMTA buses cover the city and suburbs. Gannon University sits downtown, Mercyhurst University on the east side, Penn State Behrend in Harborcreek and Edinboro's university to the south. Presque Isle State Park draws heavy traffic all summer, and the shipyard and port along the bayfront still handle lake freighters.
For a mobile mechanic, Erie is mostly driveways and detached garages. Downtown and the older neighborhoods have narrow lots and street parking, while Millcreek and the suburbs have attached garages and wider streets. In winter, plowed snowbanks narrow the streets, so the mechanic plans where to park before arriving.
