Independence sits on the eastern edge of Kansas City, and its roads tie it to the city and the eastern suburbs. I-70 runs east-west across the southern part of town, carrying commuters toward downtown Kansas City and east toward Blue Springs. I-470 branches southwest toward Lee's Summit, and MO 291 runs north-south along the east side, north toward Liberty and south toward Lee's Summit. US 24 crosses the north side near the historic Square, and US 40 runs along the south side. Noland Road is the main commercial corridor, and Truman Road, 23rd Street and Little Blue Parkway carry most crosstown traffic.
Noland Road is the city's busiest street, lined with shopping centers and restaurants, and it backs up at its I-70 interchange most afternoons. I-70 itself is a heavy commuter route, and breakdowns stack up on its shoulders during rush hour. The Square and the neighborhoods around it have older, narrower streets, while the east side along Little Blue Parkway has newer subdivisions with wide streets and cul-de-sacs.
Kansas City International Airport is a long drive northwest, and many Independence households use its long-term lots. Regional buses run along the main corridors, but most people drive everywhere, so having a repair done at home or work saves a real chunk of the day. The Truman Library, the Square and the frontier trails museum also draw a steady stream of visitors who park downtown.
The Truman Sports Complex sits just west of the city near I-70 and I-435, and game days bring heavy traffic through western Independence and onto the interstate ramps.
