Olathe is the Johnson County seat and one of the fastest-growing cities in the Kansas City metro, stretching from older neighborhoods around the historic downtown to new subdivisions on former farmland. I-35 runs diagonally through the city, connecting Olathe with Kansas City to the northeast and Gardner and Ottawa to the southwest. K-10 runs along the north edge toward Lawrence, and K-7 runs north-south along the west side toward Shawnee. US 169 heads south toward Paola. Growth keeps pushing new neighborhoods west toward K-7 and south past 151st Street, where some streets are new enough that clear directions help.
Inside the city, Santa Fe Street is the main east-west route through downtown, and 119th Street, 135th Street and 151st Street carry traffic between the subdivisions and I-35. Ridgeview Road, Black Bob Road and Mur-Len Road serve as north-south arterials. I-35 backs up at rush hour, especially near the 119th Street interchange, and the K-10 and K-7 interchanges stay busy all day. Most neighborhoods have driveways and attached garages, and the wide suburban streets make on-site work easy. On the far south and west edges, newer subdivisions sit beside two-lane roads still carrying farm equipment.
Johnson County Executive Airport serves general aviation in Olathe, and Kansas City International Airport is a long drive north. RideKC buses serve parts of the city, but most people drive, many commuting to Overland Park, Lenexa or Kansas City, or out to the big logistics parks near Gardner and Edgerton. A repair done at home or work saves a drive across the metro and keeps the day on track.
