Shreveport sits on the west bank of the Red River in the far northwest corner of Louisiana, close to both Texas and Arkansas. I-20 runs east-west through the city, crossing the river into Bossier City and heading west toward Dallas. I-49 runs south toward Alexandria and Lafayette and north toward Arkansas, and I-220 loops across the north side of Shreveport and Bossier City. The Inner Loop Expressway, LA 3132, curves across the south side, connecting I-20 with the southern neighborhoods. The Red River separates Shreveport from Bossier City, and the bridges between them carry heavy traffic all day.
Inside the city, Youree Drive runs south along the river through the shopping districts, Line Avenue and Kings Highway serve the older neighborhoods, and Mansfield Road carries US 171 toward the southwest. Clyde Fant Parkway follows the riverfront. I-20 and the river bridges back up at rush hour, and Youree Drive is busy most of the day. The older neighborhoods have tree-lined streets and driveways, while south Shreveport has newer subdivisions with attached garages. Cross Lake on the west side supplies the city's water and has homes along its shore. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop and 70th Street are the busy east-west routes across the south side, lined with shopping and restaurants.
Shreveport Regional Airport sits on the west side, and Barksdale Air Force Base is across the river in Bossier City. SporTran runs buses across the city, but most people drive, many commuting between Shreveport and Bossier City every day. A repair at home or work saves a trip across the river. Military families from Barksdale often live on the Shreveport side, and their cars can sit for long stretches during deployments and moves.
