Stamford sits on Long Island Sound in lower Fairfield County, and it functions as both a corporate center and a commuter town for New York. I-95 runs through the southern part of the city near the train station and downtown, heading west toward Greenwich and New York and east toward Darien and Norwalk. The Merritt Parkway crosses the northern part of the city, and US 1 follows Main Street and the old Post Road. Route 137 runs north from downtown along Washington Boulevard and High Ridge Road, and Route 104 follows Long Ridge Road toward New York State.
I-95 through Stamford is one of the busiest and most congested stretches of interstate in the region, with backups at nearly every exit at rush hour. The Merritt Parkway is a scenic, tree-lined road with tight curves, narrow shoulders and low stone bridges, closed to trucks and trailers. Downtown's streets fill with office traffic during the week, and Washington Boulevard and Tresser Boulevard back up around the train station. A breakdown on I-95 or the Merritt is dangerous, and getting to a safe spot is the first step.
The Stamford Transportation Center is one of the busiest stations on Metro-North, with Amtrak service and a large commuter garage, and plenty of people park there every weekday. Westchester County Airport in White Plains is the closest commercial airport, with LaGuardia and the other New York airports farther away. Local buses run throughout the city, but most households keep at least one car, often garaged at a downtown building or a North Stamford home. Because so many drivers split their week between the train and the car, a vehicle can sit untouched for days and then be expected to start instantly on a frigid evening at the station.
