Buffalo's highway map is a ring of expressways around an older street grid, with avenues radiating out from Niagara Square. The Thruway, I-90, curves around the east side through Cheektowaga and West Seneca on its way between Rochester and Erie, Pennsylvania. I-190, the Niagara Thruway, runs along the river through downtown and up past Tonawanda toward Grand Island and Niagara Falls, and I-290 cuts across Amherst and Tonawanda to connect the two.
Inside that ring, the Kensington Expressway links downtown with the airport and the eastern suburbs, the Scajaquada carries traffic past Delaware Park and Buffalo State, and the Skyway lifts NY 5 high over the Buffalo River toward Lackawanna and the Southtowns. NY 400, the Aurora Expressway, feeds East Aurora and the southern suburbs. The Skyway closes in high wind and heavy snow, so drivers heading south learn the detours through South Buffalo. A stalled car on any of these elevated or narrow-shouldered roads is dangerous, and mobile help is often the fastest way back to safety.
Buffalo Niagara International Airport sits in Cheektowaga off Genesee Street, and the Metro Rail line runs along and under Main Street from Canalside to the University at Buffalo South Campus. The Peace Bridge crosses to Fort Erie, Ontario, and cross-border traffic stacks up near the West Side. Driveways, rather than garages, are where most local repairs happen, and Buffalo's long narrow lots mean many of them run beside the house to a detached garage out back.
