Yonkers sits on a series of hills between the Hudson River and the Bronx River, and its roads follow the valleys between them. The New York State Thruway, I-87, runs north through the middle of the city from the Major Deegan in the Bronx, and the Saw Mill River Parkway follows the valley of the same name. The Sprain Brook Parkway runs up the east side, the Cross County Parkway cuts east toward Mount Vernon and the Hutchinson, and the Bronx River Parkway marks the eastern edge near Crestwood.
On the surface, Broadway carries US 9 along the river side of town through Getty Square, Central Park Avenue runs north from the Bronx line past the city's biggest shopping centers, and Yonkers Avenue and McLean Avenue cross between them. Streets on the hills are steep and winding, and many blocks near downtown and on Park Hill and Nodine Hill have little off-street parking. Commercial vehicles are barred from the parkways, so service vans come in by the Thruway and the avenues, which still keeps most addresses within easy reach.
Metro-North's Hudson Line stops at Yonkers, Glenwood, Ludlow and Greystone along the river, and the Harlem Line serves the east side at Crestwood, so plenty of commuters ride into Manhattan while their car stays home. Station lots and garages are a common place for a car to refuse to start at the end of the day, and they are easy for a mechanic to reach.
