Casper sits along the North Platte River at the foot of Casper Mountain, in the middle of Wyoming's open high plains. I-25 runs through the city along the river, heading southeast toward Glenrock, Douglas and Cheyenne and north toward Kaycee and Buffalo. US 20 and US 26 run west toward Shoshoni and Riverton, WY 220 heads southwest along CY Avenue toward Alcova and Rawlins, and WY 258, Wyoming Boulevard, loops around the south and east sides of the city. Casper Mountain Road climbs steeply south of town toward the cabins and trails on the mountain.
For a mobile mechanic, Casper is easy to cross, with most neighborhoods laid out on a grid with driveways and garages. Wind is the biggest obstacle, and I-25 and the highways out of town close during severe winter storms. The oilfield and ranch roads beyond the city are gravel, rough and long, and many pickups that work them come in with flat tires, broken suspension parts and worn brakes. Casper Mountain Road can be treacherous in winter, so access to the cabins up top depends on conditions that day.
Casper/Natrona County International Airport sits northwest of the city, a short drive from most neighborhoods. The city has a small bus service, but nearly everyone drives. Casper College on the south side, the downtown medical center, the events center and the refinery and industrial areas east of town bring steady traffic, and many shift workers commute in from Mills, Evansville and Bar Nunn.
