Cleveland's freeways fan out from downtown like the spokes of a wheel. I-90 runs along the lake through downtown, swinging around the sharp curve at the east end of the Innerbelt and continuing east toward Euclid and Mentor and west toward Lakewood and Westlake. I-71 heads southwest past the airport toward Strongsville and Columbus, I-77 runs south through the industrial valley toward Akron, and I-490 links I-77 with the east side. I-480 crosses the southern suburbs, spanning the Cuyahoga valley on its way between the west side and the eastern suburbs.
The Shoreway, SR 2, follows the lake west of downtown toward Lakewood, and I-271 loops around the eastern suburbs. On the surface, Euclid Avenue, Carnegie Avenue and Chester Avenue carry traffic between downtown and University Circle, while Lorain Avenue, Detroit Avenue and Pearl Road serve the west side. The Cuyahoga River and its valley split the city, and the bridges over the Flats and the valley are where winter wind and ice hit hardest.
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport sits on the southwest side off I-71, and RTA's Red Line rapid runs from the airport through downtown to the east side, while the HealthLine bus rapid transit runs along Euclid Avenue to University Circle. The Blue and Green lines serve Shaker Heights. That transit network lets many people leave the car at home while it is fixed in the driveway.
For a mobile mechanic, Cleveland is a city of driveways and detached garages, with older double houses and long narrow lots on both the east and west sides. Street parking downtown, in Ohio City and in Tremont is tighter, and winter parking bans during heavy snow affect where a car can sit, so the mechanic plans around them before arriving.
