Toledo sits where the Maumee River meets the western end of Lake Erie, and its freeways are built around that river. I-75 runs north through the city toward Detroit and south toward Dayton, crossing the Maumee near downtown. I-475 loops around the west side through Sylvania and Maumee, carrying US 23 north into Michigan, and I-280 runs along the east side, crossing the river on the tall cable-stayed Veterans' Glass City Skyway. The Ohio Turnpike, I-80/90, runs east to west just south of the city.
The Anthony Wayne Trail, which carries US 24, links downtown with south Toledo and Maumee, and Monroe Street, Central Avenue and Secor Road carry traffic across the west side, lined with shopping centers that make easy meeting spots. The city is flat and the grid is easy to navigate, but heavy truck traffic on I-75, I-475 and the Turnpike makes a highway breakdown dangerous, especially in winter.
Toledo Express Airport sits west of the city near Swanton, and many travelers also use Detroit Metropolitan Airport to the north. TARTA buses cover the city and the University of Toledo. The port, the rail yards and the industrial areas along the river keep the east side busy with trucks and freight.
For a mobile mechanic, Toledo is easy to work in. Most homes have driveways or detached garages, the suburbs are a short drive on I-475, and the city's flat terrain means level ground is rarely a problem. The tighter spots are downtown garages, the Old West End's older streets and the student blocks near UT.
