Dover sits on the Cocheco River near the head of Great Bay, and the Spaulding Turnpike, NH 16, runs north-south along the east side of the city as its main highway. The turnpike heads south across the Little Bay Bridges toward Newington and Portsmouth and north toward Rochester and the Lakes Region. NH 108 runs through the city as Central Avenue, heading south toward Durham and Newmarket and north toward Somersworth. NH 4 heads west toward Durham and Concord, NH 9 crosses the city toward Barrington and Somersworth, and NH 155 heads northwest toward Madbury and Lee.
The Spaulding Turnpike is busy at rush hour, especially at the Little Bay Bridges and the Dover exits, as commuters head toward Portsmouth and the Pease area. Central Avenue backs up through downtown, and the roads to Durham fill with University of New Hampshire traffic during the school year. Breakdowns cluster on the turnpike and on the bridges, where there's little room to pull over.
Portsmouth International Airport at Pease sits just south of the city across Little Bay, and the Downeaster train stops in downtown Dover on its run between Boston and Maine. Local buses connect Dover, Durham and Portsmouth, but most people drive.
Dover's older neighborhoods around downtown and Garrison Hill sit on narrow streets lined with older homes, while the outer parts of the city have newer subdivisions and wooded rural roads. Some of those rural roads are narrow and unlined.
