Eugene sits at the southern end of the Willamette Valley where the McKenzie River joins the Willamette, and its freeways link it closely with Springfield across the river. I-5 runs north and south along the east edge of the city toward Portland and Medford, I-105 and OR 126 connect downtown Eugene with Springfield, and the Beltline Highway, OR 569, curves across the north side between I-5 and west Eugene. OR 99 heads northwest toward Junction City. Eugene and Springfield work as one metro, and many households live in one and work in the other.
OR 126 continues west from Eugene toward Veneta and Florence on the coast and east from Springfield up the McKenzie River toward the Cascades, while OR 58 heads southeast toward Oakridge and Willamette Pass. The Beltline and the Delta Highway interchange back up at rush hour, and the Ferry Street Bridge and the I-105 bridges over the Willamette are pinch points for anyone crossing between Eugene and Springfield.
Eugene Airport sits northwest of the city, and its long-term lots are a common place for a car to need attention after a trip. LTD's EmX bus rapid transit line runs between west Eugene, downtown, the University of Oregon and Springfield, and many people bike or ride the bus to campus and work. On football Saturdays, traffic around the stadium across the river slows the whole east side.
For a mobile mechanic, Eugene is a comfortable city to work in. Most homes have driveways or carports, the flat neighborhoods north of downtown are easy to reach, and South Eugene's hilly streets just need a level spot for any job that needs a jack. The campus area and downtown rely on permit lots and garages. Bikes are everywhere, so the mechanic takes care not to block bike lanes when parking.
