Salem sits in the middle of the Willamette Valley, with the river running north through the city and splitting it between Marion County on the east and Polk County on the west. I-5 runs along the east side of town toward Portland and Eugene, and OR 22 crosses the city east to west, heading toward Stayton and the Santiam Canyon in one direction and across the river through West Salem toward Dallas and the coast in the other. OR 99E runs through the north side as Salem Parkway, and OR 221, Wallace Road, follows the west bank north from West Salem.
The Marion Street and Center Street bridges, each carrying one direction of traffic, are the only road crossings of the Willamette in the city, and they back up badly at rush hour. A breakdown on either bridge brings traffic to a halt for everyone heading to or from West Salem, and the Union Street Railroad Bridge nearby carries only walkers and cyclists. On the east side, Commercial Street runs south through the older core toward South Salem, and Lancaster Drive is the busy commercial strip near I-5.
Salem's airport handles mostly general aviation, so most travelers drive north to Portland International. Cherriots buses cover the city and Keizer, and many state workers commute from across the valley to the Capitol Mall and the state office buildings. The Oregon State Fairgrounds and Chemeketa Community College sit on the northeast side, and Willamette University borders the Capitol downtown.
For a mobile mechanic, Salem is mostly driveways and garages. Downtown and the Capitol area rely on garages and surface lots, West Salem and South Salem have hilly streets with sloping driveways, and the northeast side and Keizer have flat subdivisions with plenty of room. Rural homes around Turner, Aumsville and Silverton just need clear directions.
