Kapolei was planned as Oahu's second city, and its roads show it: wide parkways, big intersections and a freeway that begins right at its edge. The H-1 starts here and runs east past Waipahu and Pearl City into Honolulu, while Farrington Highway continues west along the Waianae Coast. Fort Weaver Road carries Ewa Beach traffic to the freeway, Kualakai Parkway links Kapolei Parkway with the H-1 in East Kapolei, Fort Barrette Road runs south toward Kalaeloa, Makakilo Drive climbs into the hills and Kunia Road heads north into Central Oahu.
The defining feature of driving here is the morning commute into town. The H-1 eastbound backs up from the Kunia interchange through Waipahu nearly every weekday, and a car that overheats, throws a belt or blows a tire in that stop-and-go is stranded on one of the busiest stretches on the island. Getting a repair done at home or at work in Kapolei means not losing a morning to that drive twice.
Kalaeloa Airport and the Coast Guard air station occupy the old Barbers Point base, Kalaeloa Harbor handles cargo for the industrial park, and the Skyline elevated rail begins in East Kapolei. UH West Oahu brings student cars into the area too, many of them older commuters kept running for the daily drive. With TheBus and rail both serving the area, you can get to work while your car is repaired in the driveway.
