Kahului sits on the flat isthmus between Maui's two volcanoes, and nearly every road on the island passes through it. Kaahumanu Avenue links Kahului with Wailuku and the county offices. The Hana Highway heads east past the airport to Paia and the north shore, the Haleakala Highway climbs to Pukalani, Makawao and Kula, the Mokulele Highway crosses the valley to Kihei, and the Kuihelani Highway runs to Maalaea, where the Honoapiilani Highway continues along the coast to Lahaina.
That funnel makes Kahului the busiest place on Maui to drive. Dairy Road and the Hana Highway near the airport jam up with rental cars, delivery trucks and commuters, and the Mokulele and Kuihelani carry heavy traffic between home in one part of the island and work in another. A breakdown on those open, windy stretches leaves little shade and not much room on the shoulder. Traffic thins out quickly once you leave the central valley, so a mechanic based in Kahului can usually reach Wailuku, Kihei or Paia without much delay.
Kahului Airport is the island's main gateway, and Kahului Harbor next door receives most of Maui's cargo, including auto parts arriving by barge. The University of Hawaii Maui College sits along Kaahumanu Avenue, and Maui Memorial Medical Center is just up the road in Wailuku. The Maui Bus runs routes through town, but most people rely on their own vehicle.
