Kearney sits on the north bank of the Platte River in the middle of Nebraska, with I-80 running just south of the city along the river valley. The interstate connects Kearney with Grand Island and Lincoln to the east and North Platte to the west. US 30 runs east-west through downtown along the railroad, 2nd Avenue, the main commercial corridor, runs north from the I-80 interchange through downtown to the north side, and Nebraska 10 continues south across the river toward Minden. Nebraska 44 heads south from I-80 toward Axtell, and 39th Street is the busiest east-west street on the north side.
Kearney is laid out on a grid, and traffic is light most of the day. The main slow spots are 2nd Avenue at the I-80 interchange, where hotels, restaurants and travelers cluster, and 39th Street near the shopping areas. The Union Pacific main line runs through the middle of town, and long freight trains can block crossings for several minutes. Many households live on acreages and farms around the city, which take a bit longer to reach. Interstate travelers make up a large share of the traffic along 2nd Avenue, especially in summer.
Kearney Regional Airport is on the east side of the city, and its lots are small and easy to work in. There is little public transit, so nearly everyone drives, often long distances on rural roads. UNK students tend to walk or bike on campus, so their cars can sit for weeks.
The Great Platte River Road Archway spans I-80 just east of town, and each spring the sandhill crane migration fills the river valley with visitors and slows the rural roads near the Platte.
