Milford straddles the Mispillion River on the line between Kent and Sussex counties, at the crossroads between Delaware's capital and its beaches. Route 1, the Coastal Highway, bypasses the city to the east, heading north toward Dover and south toward Rehoboth Beach and Lewes. US 113, DuPont Boulevard, runs south from the city toward Georgetown. Route 14 runs west toward Harrington and east to Route 1, Route 36 heads east toward Slaughter Beach and the bay, and Route 30 runs north-south through the countryside west of Route 1.
Route 1 carries heavy beach traffic every summer weekend, with long southbound backups on Friday evenings and northbound jams on Sunday afternoons, and the Milford interchanges are where much of that traffic exits for gas and food. US 113 and its shopping centers handle most local traffic, while downtown's streets are calmer, centered on the Riverwalk along the Mispillion. Many homes outside the city sit on rural roads with narrow shoulders and drainage ditches, where a breakdown leaves little room to wait safely.
DART buses offer limited service, and most households drive, with Philadelphia and Baltimore as the nearest major airports. The Bayhealth Sussex Campus hospital near Route 1 draws staff and patients from across southern Delaware. Poultry farms, grain operations and processing plants keep trucks moving on Route 1, US 113 and the back roads all year. Because the city sits halfway between Dover and the Sussex County beach towns, plenty of drivers pass through daily, and a car that falters on the way often ends up needing help right here.
