Morgantown climbs the steep hills on both sides of the Monongahela River near the Pennsylvania line, and almost every trip involves a grade. I-79 runs north and south along the western edge of the city, connecting it with Pittsburgh and Fairmont, and I-68 heads east from the I-79 junction past Cheat Lake toward Maryland. US 119 runs through the city toward Grafton and Point Marion, US 19 follows the river toward Fairmont, WV 7 heads east through Sabraton toward Masontown, and WV 705 connects the Evansdale campus, Suncrest and the hospital along Patteson Drive and Chestnut Ridge Road. University Avenue and Beechurst Avenue are the main routes along campus.
For a mobile mechanic, Morgantown's hills and traffic are the main challenges. Streets in Sunnyside, South Park and the downtown campus area are steep, narrow and lined with parked cars, and level ground can be hard to find. University Avenue, Patteson Drive and the roads around the Evansdale campus back up during class changes and rush hour, and football Saturdays clog the whole city. In winter, the steepest streets can be impassable for a day or two after a snowstorm, so planning a level, cleared spot is essential.
Morgantown Municipal Airport sits east of downtown, and its lot is easy to reach. The Personal Rapid Transit system links the downtown campus, Evansdale and the Health Sciences Center, and Mountain Line buses serve the rest of the area. West Virginia University, its Health Sciences Center and Ruby Memorial Hospital, and the football stadium and Coliseum in Evansdale bring heavy traffic. Construction around the growing medical campus and the new housing on the city's edges keeps traffic patterns changing.
