Parkersburg sits where the Little Kanawha River flows into the Ohio, with a historic downtown on the riverbanks and neighborhoods spreading up into the hills. I-77 runs north and south along the eastern edge of the city, connecting it with Marietta, Ohio, to the north and Charleston to the south. US 50 crosses the city east to west, heading east toward Clarksburg and west across the Ohio to Belpre. WV 2 runs north along the river toward Williamstown, WV 14 heads south toward Mineral Wells and Spencer, WV 68 follows the river south, and Grand Central Avenue is the main commercial strip through Vienna to the north.
For a mobile mechanic, Parkersburg is compact and easy to cross. Downtown and the North End sit on fairly flat ground, while the South Side and the hills above the rivers have steeper streets. The busiest spots are Grand Central Avenue at rush hour, the I-77 and US 50 interchange and the bridges to Ohio. Freight trains on the rail lines through the city occasionally hold up traffic, so arrival times can stretch a little. Most homes in town have driveways or alleys, and the grid around downtown and the North End makes addresses easy to find. Out in the county, roads toward Mineral Wells and Lubeck are rural and winding, so landmarks help.
The Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport serves the area, and its lot is a short drive away. Easy Rider buses serve the city and Vienna. WVU Parkersburg, the downtown medical center, the federal offices downtown and the chemical and manufacturing plants along the river bring steady traffic and many shift workers. Sternwheelers to Blennerhassett Island leave from Point Park downtown, and summer events there fill the nearby lots.
