North Las Vegas fills the northern end of the Las Vegas Valley, stretching from the older neighborhoods near downtown Las Vegas up to the newer subdivisions along the Beltway. I-15 runs northeast through the city toward Nellis Air Force Base, the Apex industrial area and Mesquite. The northern section of the 215 Beltway crosses the top of the city, connecting it with Centennial Hills on the west and I-15 on the east. Craig Road, Cheyenne Avenue and Ann Road are the main east-west arterials, and Las Vegas Boulevard North, Martin Luther King Boulevard and Losee Road carry most north-south traffic.
I-15 at the Craig Road and Cheyenne interchanges and the Beltway at rush hour are the usual slow spots, and warehouse and base shift changes bring bursts of traffic at odd hours. Breakdowns are common on I-15 in summer, when heat pushes cooling systems to the limit. The city is laid out on a wide grid of arterials, so a mechanic can reach most homes and lots quickly. Neighborhoods on the north side are still being built, and some streets are newer than the map apps, so a precise address helps.
Harry Reid International Airport is a longer drive south across the valley, and many North Las Vegas residents use its long-term lots. Buses run along the main arterials, but most people drive, many of them to jobs in the warehouses, at the base or on the Strip.
The Apex industrial area and the distribution centers along I-15 run around the clock, and many workers there need a car that starts at any hour. A dead battery at the end of a night shift, in an emptying lot far from home, is one of the most common requests on this side of the valley.
