Paterson sits on a bend of the Passaic River around the Great Falls, and its highways tie it into the North Jersey network. I-80 crosses the southern part of the city, heading west toward Wayne and the Delaware Water Gap and east toward the George Washington Bridge. NJ 19 connects I-80 and the Garden State Parkway with downtown, and NJ 20, McLean Boulevard, follows the river along the east side. US 46 runs along the southern edge through Clifton and Totowa, and the Garden State Parkway passes just east of the city. Market Street, Main Street and Broadway are the main streets through downtown.
The I-80 interchanges, NJ 19 at rush hour and the downtown streets around Main and Market are the usual trouble spots. Paterson is dense, with narrow streets, older homes and limited off-street parking in many neighborhoods, and sweeping rules apply on many blocks. Breakdowns cluster on I-80 and US 46, where traffic is heavy and shoulders are narrow. The one-way streets downtown and the hills around the falls take some learning, so a precise address helps.
Newark Liberty International Airport is a drive south down the Parkway, and many Paterson residents use its long-term lots. NJ Transit trains stop at the Paterson station on the Main Line, and buses connect the city with Newark, New York and the suburbs. Plenty of commuters leave a car near the station or the downtown bus terminal all day.
The Great Falls of the Passaic, now a national historical park, draws visitors downtown, and the ridge of Garret Mountain rises along the city's western edge.
