Roswell is a crossroads town in the Pecos Valley, and three US highways do most of the work. US 285 runs north toward Vaughn and Santa Fe and south toward Artesia and Carlsbad, with NM 2 branching off through Dexter, Hagerman and Lake Arthur. US 70 heads northeast toward Portales and Clovis and west into the mountains toward Ruidoso, and US 380 runs east toward Tatum and west through the Hondo Valley toward Capitan and Carrizozo.
Inside the city, Main Street carries US 285 past downtown and the New Mexico Military Institute, and Second Street carries US 70 and US 380 east to west through the center. The grid is easy to navigate and traffic is light compared with bigger cities, so reaching a driveway on the north or west side is quick. The bigger challenge is distance: farms, dairies, ranches and oilfield sites spread across Chaves County, and a breakdown on an open stretch of highway can leave you far from the next town.
Roswell Air Center, on the site of the former air base south of town, handles the city's airline flights along with aircraft storage and maintenance, and the Eastern New Mexico University campus sits nearby. A car parked at the airport during a trip, or one that quit on the long drive in from Albuquerque or Lubbock, is a common reason to need on-site help.
