Spokane sits along the Spokane River where the eastern Washington plateau meets the forested foothills of the Selkirks and the Idaho panhandle. I-90 runs east and west through the heart of the city, past downtown toward Spokane Valley, Coeur d'Alene and Seattle. US 2 and US 395 share Division Street as they head north toward Mead, Deer Park and Newport, and the new North Spokane Corridor freeway is gradually taking over that job. US 195 heads south toward Pullman, SR 290 follows Trent Avenue east toward Idaho, and US 2 also runs west past the airport toward Airway Heights and Fairchild Air Force Base.
For a mobile mechanic, Spokane is easy to cross outside rush hour, but its terrain splits the city into distinct pieces. The South Hill rises steeply above downtown, with winding streets that become treacherous in snow, while the North Side is flatter and laid out on a grid. Division Street is one of the busiest roads in the region, and I-90 through downtown and up Sunset Hill to the west backs up at rush hour and in winter storms. In a big snow, steep side streets on the South Hill can be impossible to climb, so a level, plowed spot matters.
Spokane International Airport sits west of the city, and its lots are a common service location. Spokane Transit runs buses and the City Line rapid bus across downtown, the University District and Gonzaga. Gonzaga University, Whitworth University, the WSU and EWU campuses in the University District and the hospitals on the lower South Hill bring heavy daily traffic, and Fairchild draws military families to the west side.
