St. Paul is built on bluffs above a big bend in the Mississippi, and its roads climb in and out of the river valley. I-94 runs east-west past the Capitol and through downtown, connecting Minneapolis with Woodbury and Wisconsin. I-35E comes up from Eagan, crosses the river and runs through downtown toward the northern suburbs, with a slower parkway stretch along the West Seventh area. US 52 crosses the river on the Lafayette Bridge and heads south toward Rochester. MN 5 follows West Seventh Street toward the airport and Fort Snelling, Snelling Avenue is the main north-south arterial on the west side, and Shepard Road traces the river below the bluffs.
The I-94 and I-35E commons downtown and the stretch of 94 through the Midway are the usual trouble spots, along with any steep street on the first icy morning. Downtown and the neighborhoods around it have real hills, from Ramsey Hill and Dayton's Bluff to the West Side bluffs, and a car that loses traction or quits on a grade is a common winter request. Away from the bluffs, the neighborhoods are laid out on a grid with alleys, and most homes have a garage in back.
The Green Line light rail runs along University Avenue between downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis, and Union Depot downtown is the hub for buses and long-distance trains. MSP airport is just across the river to the southwest, and the small downtown airport at Holman Field sits on the river flats across from downtown.
