Aurora sits on both banks of the Fox River and spills across Kane, DuPage, Will and Kendall counties. I-88, the Reagan Tollway, cuts across the north side of the city with interchanges at Orchard Road, IL 31, Farnsworth Avenue and IL 59, connecting Aurora with Naperville, the DuPage office corridor and Chicago. IL 31 and IL 25 follow the river north and south, US 30 crosses the south side between Sugar Grove and Plainfield, and IL 56 runs east as Butterfield Road toward Warrenville.
The city has two very different halves. The older core around downtown and the West Side has a traditional street grid, river bridges and plenty of narrow lots. The Far East Side, out along IL 59 and Eola Road, is newer suburban development with wide roads, big retail centers and subdivisions. IL 59 is the busiest shopping corridor and backs up constantly, and stop-and-go there and on Farnsworth Avenue is hard on brakes and transmissions. Tollway breakdowns are the most stressful, since the shoulders are busy and help can take time to arrive.
Metra's BNSF line runs from the Aurora Transportation Center downtown through the Route 59 station and on to Chicago, so plenty of people commute by train and leave a car parked all day. Pace buses fill in local routes, and the riverfront has trails on both banks. For most households, though, a working car is a necessity, and a repair that comes to the driveway saves a long day.
