Salt Lake City sits at the north end of the Salt Lake Valley between the Wasatch Range and the Great Salt Lake, and its streets run on a wide grid numbered out from Temple Square. I-15 runs north and south along the west side of downtown, connecting Davis County to the north with Utah County to the south. I-80 crosses east to west, climbing Parleys Canyon toward Park City and running west past the airport toward the salt flats. I-215 loops around the valley, SR 201 heads west toward Magna, and Bangerter Highway and the Legacy Parkway serve the western and northern suburbs.
The grid makes addresses easy to find, but the blocks are huge, so short distances on a map can still take a while. The I-15 and I-80 interchanges south of downtown and the I-215 belt on the east side back up during rush hour, and winter storms slow everything down. For a mobile mechanic, the wide streets help: there's usually room to park beside a car on the curb in the Avenues, Sugar House or Rose Park, and the canyon roads on the east side are close enough for roadside help after a ski trip.
Salt Lake City International Airport sits just west of downtown, and its economy lots are common service locations. UTA runs TRAX light rail, the FrontRunner commuter train along the Wasatch Front and the S-Line streetcar to Sugar House. The University of Utah and its hospital campus on the east bench, and the state offices around the Capitol, draw steady daytime traffic up the hill.
