West Valley City spreads across the west side of the Salt Lake Valley, from the Jordan River and I-215 on the east to the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains on the west. I-215 runs along its eastern edge, SR 201 forms the northern boundary as a freeway toward Magna, and Bangerter Highway cuts north to south through the middle of the city toward the airport. The Mountain View Corridor serves the newer neighborhoods on the far west side, Redwood Road runs along the east, and 3500 South is the main east-west commercial street.
For a mobile mechanic, West Valley is a straightforward place to work. The street grid is wide, most homes have driveways, and the big arterials make it quick to cross the city. Breakdowns cluster at the busy intersections along Bangerter and 3500 South and on the SR 201 and I-215 interchanges at rush hour. Winter storms and inversions slow everything down, and the industrial areas along SR 201 fill with truck traffic during the workday.
Salt Lake City International Airport sits just north of the city, so a car stuck in its lots is a short drive away. TRAX's Green Line ends at West Valley Central near Fairbourne Station, which serves as a park-and-ride hub for commuters headed downtown. The arena and the Utah Cultural Celebration Center draw event traffic, and the warehouses and distribution centers near the airport employ many local shift workers. Because so many households here commute across the valley, a car that fails in the driveway before dawn often means a missed shift, and an on-site repair gets it running without a tow.
