Wasilla grew up along the Parks Highway, and the highway is still its main street. The Parks runs through the middle of town, west toward Meadow Lakes, Big Lake, Houston and Willow and east to its junction with the Glenn Highway, which carries commuters across the Matanuska and Knik river bridges to Eagle River and Anchorage. The Palmer-Wasilla Highway links the two Valley cities directly, and Knik-Goose Bay Road heads south toward Knik through busy, growing subdivisions.
Bogard Road and Seldon Road run east-west north of town, carrying neighborhood traffic toward Palmer and the Wasilla-Fishhook Road, while Lucille Street and Main Street feed downtown. Many homes sit on gravel side roads off these arterials. Knik-Goose Bay Road and the Parks between town and the Glenn junction are the busiest stretches, and in winter a slide-off, a stall at a busy light or a no-start in a parking lot can tie up a whole afternoon.
The Alaska Railroad runs through downtown and a small municipal airport serves private pilots, so most air travel means a drive to Anchorage. The regional hospital and the Mat-Su College campus lie east of town toward Palmer, drawing commuters from across the Valley. Public transit is limited, and nearly every household relies on its own vehicles, often trucks and SUVs that also tow boats, campers and snowmachine trailers. When one goes down, getting it fixed at home keeps the family schedule intact.
