Juneau has no road connection to the rest of North America, and its road system is a long, narrow strip pressed between Gastineau Channel and the mountains. Egan Drive is the main highway, running from downtown past Lemon Creek and the airport to the Mendenhall Valley. Beyond the valley the route continues as Glacier Highway, north past Auke Bay toward Echo Cove, the stretch known locally as Out the Road. Thane Road runs south from downtown along the water.
The Juneau-Douglas Bridge crosses the channel to Douglas Island, where Douglas Highway runs southeast to the town of Douglas and North Douglas Highway heads northwest toward the island's far end and the road up to Eaglecrest. Mendenhall Loop Road circles the valley, connecting neighborhoods, schools and shopping. Traffic is light by most standards, but with a single main highway, a stalled car on Egan at rush hour or a spinout on an icy bridge slows everyone.
Juneau International Airport sits in the valley off Egan Drive, the Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal is at Auke Bay, and every vehicle in town arrived by barge or ferry. Capital Transit buses run the main corridor between downtown and the valley. Because there's no driving out, a repair that would elsewhere mean a tow to the next town simply has to be handled here, and having it done where the car sits saves a lot of hassle.
